Donating
Platelets (Apheresis)
|
|
By donating your platelets through platelet apheresis (ay-fer-ee-sis), you give
a very special gift of life. Patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant,
surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, or an organ transplant need
platelets in order to survive. In fact, doctors are finding platelets play a
vital role in more and more new therapies.
|
|
With just a five-day storage life, platelet donations are delivered to
patients in need within days of the donation. Platelet donors have the
satisfaction of knowing their donation will be saving a life within just a few
days.
More than 300 platelet donations are needed each week in Oklahoma and Texas to
support hospital needs in the Southwest Region.
Platelet donations require a high-tech machine only available in the Red Cross
Southwest Region at the Tulsa, Dallas, Wichita Falls and Waco Blood Centers.
|
Platelet donors are also treated to high-tech entertainment - donors can
choose to watch a movie on a DVD player with personal headphones!
Donating platelets takes about two hours, and the centers are open
a variety of hours, including Saturdays, so you can pick a suitable
time for your schedule.
